07/20/96 11:00 PM EST 07/19/96 10:45 PM EST Great skies, real clear and stable LM ~ 6.1 Hale-Bopp 20.18 UT: m1=5.9, dia=20, DC=5 10x50B, Able to see with NE 07/10/96 10:45 PM EST LM=6.1 stable air but some wierd dusty funk. Hale-Bopp visible to the naked eye with averted vision. 10X80 Binos show more than 15 arc min coma and DC = 4 - 4.5 m1=5.9. 20cm Reflector shows possible tail of 1 degree and DC=6 6.5 and nice pie slice shaped coma. Still looks like a check mark. It should rival the Lagoon Neb in brightness in a week or two. 07/6/96 11:30 PM EST ditto last night... LM=6.2, air fairly stable, great conditions again! Looked at Hale-Bopp for ~ 2 hrs or so. m1 = 6.1, DC=3, DIA=10.0 using 10X50 Binos. Good hefty V shape to the outer coma area with one side distinctly longer. The comet was just fleetingly visible with the deepest of averted vision. Took several CCD images of HB area with a 55mm f/1.8, nothing spectacular though. Took a few images of Jupiter and M27 also. 07/5/96 11:30 PM EST LM=6.0, air fairly stable, great conditions for stinky summer.
