The aurora were quite interesting. They were
first detected by Mike Taylor on the right side of the plane, who was monitoring the skyglow. He
called out that he was picking up increasing levels of ionized oxygen. Soon, there was an outbreak
of auroras which eventually spilled over to the south side of the plane. They were extremely active
and pulsating rapidly but were not very apparent to the unaided eye. However, they showed up well on image
intensified cameras. The color photo is an 8 second exposure looking north, using a Nikon CP950.
